Galle

Ceylon Escape Tours (Pvt) Ltd, the premier travel and tourism company in Sri Lanka, welcomes you to explore the historic town of Galle, nestled on the southwestern tip of the island, approximately 119 km from Colombo.

Galle, known as “Gaul” in historical contexts and pronounced “Gaala” in Sinhalese, boasts a rich heritage dating back centuries. Before the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century, Galle was known as Gimhathiththa and served as the primary port on the island, bustling with maritime activity.

The town reached its zenith of prosperity during the 18th century under Dutch colonial rule, leaving behind a legacy of architectural marvels and cultural influences that still endure today.

One of Galle’s defining features is the Gin River, locally known as Gin Ganga, which meanders through the landscape, originating from Gongala Kanda and winding its way past picturesque villages such as Neluwa, Nagoda, Baddegama, and Thelikada before finally embracing the sea at Ginthota.
